Biography of Rafael Amargo

Date of birth: March 1 1975
Rafael Amargo, whose real name is Jesús Rafael García Hernández (born in Valderrubio, Province of Granada), is a Spanish dancer and choreographer.

Although mainly influenced by flamenco (especially a great admirer of Antonio Gades), he has over time assimilated other types of choreographic trends, such as those taught in Martha Graham’s school during her stay in New York. His choreographies, sometimes very close to contemporary dance, always keep the essence of flamenco as a reference. He notably participated in 2008 as a jury and professor of body expression in season 8 of the TV show Star Academy.

Rafael Amargo and his shows have received numerous awards, including four Premios Max de las Artes Escénicas (Performing Arts Awards): two for Amargo, one for Poeta en Nueva York and one for El amor brujo; the Positano Leonide Massine Dance Award as a dancer and choreographer and the APDE Award (Association of Spanish and Flamenco Dance Teachers of Spain), with Antonio Gades and Matilde Coral. In addition, the public awarded him the Premio al Mejor espectáculo de Danza de El País de las Tentaciones for Amargo (2000) and Poeta en Nueva York (2002), which was also voted best show of the decade.
