C’est dans l’air is a song from Mylène Farmer’s seventh studio album, Point de Suture (2008). It is the fourth single extracted.
The text of the song C’est dans l’air was written by Mylène Farmer. The music for the song composed by Laurent Boutonnat .

Since something is definitely ”in the air”, let me take a brief detour and share my recent reflections with you.
Spending a lot of time in the Mylene’s world, I found myself being in the process of discovery of myself no less than a discovery of what is it about her that keeps magnetizing us for years. I am too curious and have a voracious appetite for understanding to stop a halfway or being satisfied by just scratching the surface. So deeper and deeper I go…into the rabbit hole (LOL)
Please come with me, you might encounter something quite unexpected for your own sake too.

I’ve came to understand that the most valuable mission of a human life is to express oneself fully, openly without holding back, and without fears being misunderstood or judged or not accepted. Perhaps, this is our most valuable mission which also happened to be the most difficult one. Mylene does walk to the walk. If you believe the Soul choses its life path prior to the birth (which personally I do), she seems to take the bull by the horns and doesn’t go astray from her Light-working mission no matter how hard it gets.

Only by staying loyal to the Inner Truth, one can begin reaching your full potential in the specific life incarnation as well as an eternal soul evolution as obviously Mylene did. Would it be nice to know what her past incarnation were like? Who was she? The Pharaoh, Robin Hood, Joan of Arc?

She uses her VOICE (literally!) as an instrument to make us aware of Our Selves and our true nature regardless how pretty or ugly it is. She ultimately leads us back to Our Selves. As within so without!
There is a cosmic reason indeed for her being here and now. As we are driven to her, we form a powerful exchange. It’s not one way: it’s not just simplified giver / receiver symbiosis. I think as we evolve, the world around us evolves and it helps her evolve as a result and so on and so forth. I am really amazed by this dynamic. Aren’t you? We all contribute, we all are connected, we all are the creators. She is the Spark but we are the Fire.

As far as the song goes, it’s a strong declaration of her views. This is what’s wrong with the world we are living in. This is her stand. This is what she sees. She calls it as is – no sugar coating, she cuts to the bones(!!) 🦴🦴
We are heading to the self-destruction if we won’t take the responsibility for what we have created. Mylene tries again and again to wake us up! To make us more conscious of ourselves and the world we have created. She outlines the “deadly sins” (typically ordered as: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth in her simplistic but very effectively delivered statements.

We did explode in the verge of 2020 not like in the video but the whole planet was shaken up. The Covid did turn lots of lives into the skeletons (so to speak). We have lost almost 8 million (!!) people worldwide and the toll keeps rising. It’ almost another Holocaust (where 11 million has died).
If this Is not prophetic – than what is? Some argue that the virus has nothing to do with the state of our consciousness, but I think we know better by now. And so does she. She warned us back then!
Now the war in Ukraine which pushes even closer to the edge of nuclear apocalypse)

On my end, I am trying to make my personal contribution to the Wake-up call Mylene has worked on for over 30 years by writing these articles. I hope it will make a difference in your life. Not only will it be a brief entertainment but also a food for thoughts.

Anyways, back to the actual song…It’s a great workout song besides anything else – c’mon! -as in my opinion, the entire album Point de suture is. It recharges me like a “tonic” (he-he! I am sure you got the hint). I love the mix of spoken words in the deeper register with the “very Mylene” high notes. Overall I think its an excellent track: nicely composed, produced and has such a great electric energy (besides the great context)
The track became a fan’s favorite and, according to a poll made on Mylene.net, most fans wanted this song as the third single instead of “Si j’avais au moins…“
The song enters the 2nd place of the top singles France but reaches in the second week the first place (thanks to the release of the maxis) becoming the eighth single number 1 of Mylène since the creation of the official ranking of sales of singles in France in 1984. Absolute record , no other French or international artist or group having managed to rank more than five singles in pole position.

The first four singles from Point de Suture therefore reached this first step but only stayed there for a week.
For the fourth extract from an album, it’s a great success since it will sell more than 50,000 copies. The story of C’est dans l’air is far from over.
According to the psychologist (finally, we are getting to it!) Royer, the song contains touches of humor, especially in the verses in which the singer states in a deep voice “all the sins of the world”. In this song the singer became “the spokeswoman of the misunderstood and the outcast”. According to the author Erwan Chuberre, the song is a “Dionysian hymn” which “exhorts us to transform our destiny”, which sums up the philosophy of the album Point de suture.

Mylène reserves a huge surprise for the end of 2009.
C’est dans l’air was sung on all the dates of the 2009 Tour from May 2 to September 19, 2009 . While rumors announced that the first single from the live album N°5 on Tour (the album of the indoor concerts of the 2009 Tour ) would be Libertine , everyone was amazed on Thursday November 26, 2009 : the live single was finally C’est dans the air . The clip C’est dans l’air Live by François Hanss is posted on the net the next day.
C’est dans l’air was the song accompanying the start of the tour and then the launch of the live album.

TOUR 2009
The official video was aired on television on 15 April 2009. Directed by 3D-animations designer Alain Escalle. It was shot in black and white and shows Farmer dancing with skeletons in the background (her face becomes skeletal itself). Archival nuclear test footage is also used in the video, and at the end of the video the Earth is destroyed after a nuclear explosion.

The video received mixed reviews. It was sometimes accused of “feeding morbid obsessions or of shocking by simple taste for provocation”. (I wonder what they got to say now!?)
However, Chuberre considered the video as “direct and forceful” and complimented the “exciting and electric atmosphere” of Farmer’s 2009 concerts. Chuberre also believes that the video provides “an universal truth: the destructive power at the center of this substance can destroy us, but can also help us to build.”

Mylene turns a noun into a verb in the refrain, “coïter”, which does not exist in the French language.
The clip is kept a secret. We learn just before its broadcast that it was directed by Alain Escalle (who had designed the images for the show Avant que l’ombre… in Bercy in 2006 and directed the short film, The tale of the floating world proposed in first part of these same concerts) in February 2009
This is my favorite review that summed it all up
” It’s in the air: an unstoppable KILL as we rarely hear. Energetic double-edged electro, the light of C’est dans l’air (the fastest track on the record) radiates from its dichotomy and what Point de Suture generally exudes.

The verses bathe in a similarly restructured hue of Degeneration, with limited but captivating sounds, before the chorus completely transforms the piece on a catchy melody, monstrously effective, impossible to withdraw from the skull (haha! Another one!) after listening.

The text, as explicit as it is ambiguous, living from a very pious lexical field (“angel”, “apostle”, “Lord”, “heavens,” felony), shows us for the first time, without amphibology, an exacerbated nihilism of the author: “Who cares, we deny everything, we will end up at the bottom of the hole, Nonsense of the future of Cioran, extract from the work On the peaks of despair : “In the silence of contemplation then resounds a dismal and insistent sound, like a gong in a dead universe.

This drama, only the one who saw it. has dissociated existence and time: fleeing the first, here he is crushed by the second. And he feels the advance of time as the advance of death. ” On second reading, the text of C’est dans l’air also appears as a grinding settling of scores, initialed with multiple metaphors. Obviously, the bomb of the CD, for which it is difficult not to hope for a video clip soon. ” (Discordance.fr – 08/24/2008)
The lyrics are perfect for someone like me who is just learning French. (haha!)

Many remixes are offered by Greg B (who has already remixed Appelle mon numero in 2008), Fat Phaze (who has already remixed QI in 2005 and L’Amour n’est rien… in 2006) and Wize who remixes for the first time a title of Mylène.
The name of the remixer is not indicated for the “Extended Club Mix” and the “Extended Instrumental” but it is Laurent Boutonnat who made them. He had not created remixes for Mylène since 2002 and Pardonne-moi (“Dark Side of the Mix”).
At the end of 2009, to accompany the release of C’est dans l’air as the first extract from the live album N°5 on Tour , it was the world-renowned remixer Tiësto who offered two new remixes of the song.
