At first sight, the song seems to tell the story of a couple in which the woman accuses the man to shirk his responsibilities and to not get involved in the love relationship. However, the text allows a second meaning and seems to refer to premature ejaculation or perhaps just overall young unskillful lover who rushes in…

“No doubt, this is part of the Libertine cycle, and Pourvu qu’elles soient douces. Again, I surely have some scores to settle with men. It’s a way of not taking yourself seriously for the song one little different from the rest of the album. ” (Mylène Farmer – ” Podium “- September 1991)

Pas de doute is therefore part of Mylène’s songs relating to sexuality. According to the interpretation of many, the topic covered is … premature ejaculation.

Way ahead of time (if it is in fact the real meaning) she speaks up on behalf of woman and men as statistically as high as 40% of men suffer from premature ejaculation. You do the math how many unsatisfied women out there because of that (and in some cases men). So it is, my friends, a bigger problem than we all wish to admit. Again Mylene is being brave and not only digs deeply under the sheets but also not ashamed to reveal what she finds there.

I can’t help but think of the Sex and the City episode “Shortcomings” with Justin Theroux .

Carrie and Justin Theroux burst into her apartment and start going at it, tearing off each other’s clothes until they’re both stripped down to their underwear. When Carrie pins Justin against the wall and canoodles him, he begins thrusting his pelvis and prematurely ejaculates in his boxers…and Carrie’s like, “Oh..? Eww..” and awkwardly hands him a tissue.

Bertrand Le Page, the former manager of Mylène (from whom she separated in 1989 following a scandal he created during the dinner organized for the presentation of the diamond disc of the album Ainsi soit je…) had a very different vision of the song.

“There is, in addition in the album L’autre … a song, Pas de doute, which, I believe, is intended for me. ” (Bertrand Le Page – “Platine” – 1994)

Hmm, there is a headscratcher…as you might already know Bertrand Le Page committed a suicide in 1999. He might have been mentally troubled man…so who knows what Mylene is truly trying to say…

I bet only very few know for sure…and my God, how much I wish to ask her (and not only about the No doubts)

It saddens me what happen…as I am sure Mylene as she has known him and some say even owns him her image of a “mystery woman”

The song is one of the very few which are truly “cheerful” in it’s melody. The production is of course quite primitive by the modern standards when any dinky tune sounds like a million bucks 😊 Surprisingly despite the flat 80s sound and it’s unimaginative (again by modern standards) arrangements, it doesn’t sound “old” even now…perhaps, sounds “aged” like a good cheddar. 😊 The base (or a simulation of such) sounds actually nice. I love Mylene’s little voice 30 years ago – like a little creek in the woods- it’s just flows higher and lower over the notes, creating a pure and innocent feeling no matter what type of sexual topics she chooses to plug in…

Another thing of course comes to mind is a band “No doubts” with Gwen Stefani. It is formed in 1986 believe or not – yup that’s how far back they are going…pretty much to Mylene’s time (hahaha)
