Laisse le vent emporter tout (Let the Wind Take Everything) is a last (#12) song from Mylène Farmer’s fourth studio album, Anamorphosée (1995).

The lyrics for Laisse le vent take tout were written by Mylène Farmer. Music composed, produced and arranged by Laurent Boutonnat. Mixing: Thierry Rogen.

Mylène thought of her father, Max Gautier, who died on July 11, 1986 while writing the text Laisse le vent emporter tout. She indicated it with emotion in concert on several dates of the 1996 Tour before performing this song. Dernier Sourire:

has also been in mind of many connecting it to Mylene’s dad and it definitely explains her highly emotional response to those particular songs.

So little we really know about him and their relationship but one thing for sure, the loss of him was a deepest wound for such young Mylene. She was only 25 and at the very dawn of her carrier. I hope Max was helping her from heavens knowing how much she wanted it to happen.

I don’t if you have noticed, but I have noticed an interesting pattern, many people who became successful following their dreams seems to all have in common: someone very close to them like a parent, sibling or a close friend passed away and they usually acknowledge them especially when receiving awards and recognitions. Perhaps, there is something to it.

Maybe the soul once crossed over have a bit more influence on our material world and help the dreams come true for those they love…Perhaps it’s the way for them to make it clear that they are in fact not far from you.

Anyhow, the song is among the most beautiful ballads and has a gorgeous melody (thank you, Laurent!) combined with the best vocals in high register and an angelic undertones – in short, everything we’d except and crave from Mylene. She melts our hearts like ice-cream on the summer day, we sob with her and when the song is over we beg for more. Every time…The piano and the acoustic guitar are a perfect together in its simplicity and a clarity delivering simply gorgeous theme. Love love love it. It is honestly a tie with Rever to me.

Mylène may have been inspired by several poems by one of her favorite writers, Pierre Reverdy.

Two poems from the collection La lucarne ovale published in 1916: There is always something left and these verses: “The lugubrious and strong wind carries everything”, the poem Ruine completed: “It is a man without feet who would like to run / A woman without head that would like to speak “(Mylène writes:”I dreamed of you, a man without a foot “).

In the poem Love in the Shop (The Sleeping Guitar, 1919): “Everything that happened slips into darkness” (Mylène writes: “But everything that happened / Slips next to it”).

Another famous phrase comes to mind: “this too shall pass”. It has been attributed to the King Solomon but in reality, the origin of the phrase is rather unknown: https://simplicable.com/new/this-too-shall-pass

Let the Wind Take Everything was the first song on the album recorded although the last one on the list of songs. Thierry Rogen also provided the mix before leaving the project and being replaced by Bertrand Châtenet.

There was also a famous kiss which Madonna made a big buzz. Guess who was with her then? Yes! Donna De Lory! I’d say its a small world and we are all indeed connected. Even Mylene and Madonna. I guess they kissed the girl and they liked it 🙂

Donna De Lory

Who is Donna De Lory? Born September 10 1964 she is an American singer, dancer and songwriter. Part of a musical family, De Lory has been performing since a young age. Her voice can be heard on albums by Carly Simon, Ray Parker Jr., Kim Carnes, Santana, Martika, Laura Branigan, Belinda Carlisle, Selena, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Mylène Farmer, Alisha and Madonna. De Lory accompanied Madonna as backing vocalist and dancer on every concert from the Who’s That Girl Tour in 1987, up to the Confessions Tour in 2006. Her performance with Madonna at the Live Earth 2007 concert in London was their final professional collaboration to date.

De Lory first came to the public’s attention as Madonna’s backup singer. In 1985, Gardner Cole, then De Lory’s boyfriend, wrote the song “Open Your Heart” which Madonna would later record. At the time Madonna’s management was looking for material for her True Blue album, and Cole submitted three songs, including “Open Your Heart”. Madonna’s manager heard the song and thought it would be a hit for Madonna, so he asked Cole to re-record the song with a female voice. De Lory recorded the song, and Cole then submitted the recording to Madonna’s producer Patrick Leonard. Madonna listened to the recording and decided to record the song. Leonard liked De Lory’s voice and hired her to sing backup on future projects he produced. When Madonna was looking for backup singers for her 1987 Who’s That Girl Tour, De Lory asked Leonard to take her to the auditions. De Lory got the job and toured with Madonna on all her world tours until 2007. De Lory also sang backup on many of Madonna’s songs.

n 2013, De Lory announced via her Twitter account that she would be releasing a new album titled The Unchanging. It was released worldwide on iTunes on 27 August 2013  and made #2 on the World Music Album chart. De Lory combines her melodic vocals and world music influences, but predominantly sings in English. Her former singing partner Niki Haris also features on the track “Kinder” along with Tina Malia. The album also includes a reinterpretation of her single “Praying for Love” and her take on “Amazing Grace”. In 2016, De Lory teamed up with Haris to record a cover version of Madonna’s 1993 single “Rain”, to which they originally had sung backing vocals.

TOUR 2009

Laisse le vent emporter tout was sung exclusively on the five stadium dates of the Tour 2009 from September 4 to 19, 2009. Arrangements for the stage: Yvan Cassar. To me its the celebration of Mylene’s Birthday and this song followed right after will be forever the most unforgettable moment of the Tour 2009.

The emotional wave size of a tsunami takes over the huge stadium with over 80 000 people(!!!) present. I bet, the glow of the hearts lit that evening could be visible in space. No dry eye in the crowd. Mylene herself has tears running down her beautiful face… This is an epic performance and the epic song. Dear Max, please tell me you felt it too 🙏❤

Laisse le vent emporter tout is the only song sung on the 2009 Tour which does not appear on any audio support for this show (which a shame as it is just so pretty!). The other songs performed only during stadium concerts (California, L’Instant X and Fuck them all  appear on a CD included in the collector’s version of the Stade de France DVD .

MY POETRY INSPIRED BY THE SONG

Fight against all you want
Pull away all you can
Separate every molecule
Of your SELF
From the particles of my soul
Take what’s yours,
Leave what’s mine
If you know what it is
That you’re trying to break.
Deconstruct all you wish
To the muscles and bones
To the sunsets and dawns
That we’ve spent all alone
Put on wings and take off –
Don’t look down to the Earth
Pouring farewells on me –
I am here on your left
Can’t you feel? Can you see?
I’m a wing-flap away…

lyrics with translation

Mais tout ce qui s'est passé
Glisse à côté
Comme l'eau sur les joues
Rester comme ça attaché
Quand l'autre a quitté

Et tous ce mots qu'on a dit
Mots qu'on a fuit
Où sont-ils allés
Rester comme ça attaché
Ne peut rien changer
Alors va

Je laisse le vent emporter tout
Laisse le vent prendre soin de tout
Je laisse le vent emporter tout
Laisse le vent prendre soin de tout

Je t'ai rêvé homme sans pied
Dieu ou névé
Ou comme un bruit doux
Là j'irai bien te chercher
J'ai tellement changé

Mais tout ce qui c'est passé
Glisse à côté
Comme l'eau sur les joues
Quand je t'ai pris par la main
C'etait un matin
Bien

Je laisse le vent emporter tout
Laisse le vent prendre soin de tout
Je laisse le vent emporter tout
Laisse le vent prendre soin de nous

But everything that happened
Slips by
Like water on the cheeks
Staying like this tied up
When the other left

And all those words we said
Words we ran away from
Where did they go
Staying like this tied up
Can’t change anything
So go

I let the wind take everything
Let the wind take care of everything
I let the wind take it all away
Let the wind take care of everything

I dreamed you man without feet
God or wasteland
Or like a soft sound
There I’ll look for you
I’ve changed so much

But everything that happened
Slips by
Like water on the cheeks
When I took you by the hand
It was a morning
Well

I let the wind take everything
Let the wind take care of everything
I let the wind take it all away
Let the wind take care of us
