Rejetée par une mère qui voulait vivre ses rêves de réussite par procuration, Frances Farmer a sombré dans l’alcoolisme. Et se voit placer de force dans un asile d’Aliénés…
Après sept ans de maltraitances, voire de tortures, psychologiques et physiques-elle aurait été attachée, violée, immergée dans des cuves d’eau glacée des journées entières…

La star est finalement déclaré « saine d’esprit » en 1950. Elle a trente sept ans. Hollywood, bien sûr, ne l’a pas attendue. Elle n’est plus rien. L’alcool, le seul amour de sa triste vie, aura malheureusement le dessus…De violentes crises d’éthylisme la submergent, la paralysent de plus en plus souvent.

Virée de la télévision, elle mourra seule…sans argent, rongée par un cancer de l’œsophage, le 1er août 1970…À seulement cinquante sept ans…Jessica Lange, en 1983, incarnera merveilleusement dans « Frances » cette jeune femme talentueuse brisée par la sauvagerie psychiatrique et
la machine à rêve hollywoodienne. L’actrice a même confié que c’était le « rôle de sa vie », Parceque ce n’était pas un rôle, mais une vie…
