Après l’accueil très mitigé du premier film de Laurent Boutonnat, « Giorgino » sorti en octobre 1994, dans lequel Mylène tenait le premier rôle, elle décide de prendre du recul et part s’installer neuf mois aux USA, à Los Angeles.
Profitant de cet exil américain, Mylène trouve l’inspiration pour créer de nouvelles chansons. Au printemps de 1995. Laurent Boutonnat vient la rejoindre sur la côte Ouest américaine pour travailler avec elle sur un nouvel album.
Inspirée par ses lectures, ses voyages et ses réflexions, Mylène écrit de nouvelles chansons, plus zen et optimistes que celles de son répertoire familier. Les paroles de « XXL » sont un bon exemple de cet apaisement et de ce changement d’optique.
Le texte parle du besoin d’amour de manière directe, sans complexe et sans le côté sombre habituel des paroles de Mylène. Pour coller à ce changement, Laurent Boutonnat crée une musique assez rock, presque hard rock, et acoustique, là aussi assez différente de ce qu’il a l’habitude de faire. Cette nouvelle chanson est enregistrée durant l’été 1995 aux studios Record One sur Ocean Way, avec Jeff Dahlgren et le fidèle ingénieur du son Thierry Rogen.
Le clip de XXL est tourné évidemment à Los Angeles, non pas par Laurent Boutonnat mais par Marcus Nispel, connu pour son travail avec Elton John et George Michael.
Le 24 août 1995, un immense XXL en fer forgé, sur lequel est posé le CD promo avec l’inscription « Mylene Farmer » gravée, arrive dans les stations de radios françaises qui l’entrent en playlist très rapidement !
Le disque XXL commercialisé le 19 septembre 1995 en quatre versions : CD 2 titres, CD maxi digipack en édition limitée, CD Maxi avec un boîtier en cristal et Maxi 45 tours, de quoi nous satisfaire largement !
XXL atteint la première place des meilleures ventes de singles en France dès sa sortie et ne tardera pas à s’écouler à 120 000 exemplaires.
La chanson deviendra très vite pour nous, un véritable hymne lors des concerts pharaoniques de la belle rouquines.
La chanson connaît également un grand succès en suisse, en Allemagne et en Belgique, annonçant prématurément le succès de l’album « Anamorphosée » le mois d’octobre suivant…Bonne soirée à vous les z’amis, et une pensée particulière pour Valerie Barthelemy…tout comme les autres ici présent, je t’aime tu le sait très bien…

Anecdote #15: “Made in L.A”
After the very mixed reception of Laurent Boutonnat‘s first film, “Giorgino“, released in October 1994, in which Mylène played the lead role, she decided to take a step back and move to the United States for nine months, to Los Angeles.
Taking advantage of this Mylène took advantage of this American exile to find the inspiration to create new songs. In the spring of Laurent Boutonnat joined her on the American West Coast to work with her on a new album.
Inspired by her readings, her travels and her reflections, Mylène wrote new songs, more zen and optimistic than those of her familiar repertoire. The lyrics of “XXL” are a good example of this calming and change of perspective.
The text speaks about the need for love in a direct way, without complex and without the usual dark side of Mylène’s lyrics. To stick to this change, Laurent Boutonnat creates a music rather rock, almost hard rock, and acoustic, there also rather different from what he is used to do. This new song was recorded during the summer of 1995 at Record One Studios on Ocean Way, with Jeff Dahlgren and the faithful sound engineer Thierry Rogen.
The video clip of XXL is obviously shot in Los Angeles, not by Laurent Boutonnat but by Marcus Nispel, known for his work with Elton John and George Michael.
On August 24, 1995, a huge XXL in wrought iron, on which is put the promo CD with the inscription “Mylene Farmer” engraved, arrives in the French radio stations which enter it in playlist very quickly!

XXL reaches the first place of the best sales of singles in France as of its release and will not delay to sell 120 000 copies. The song will become very quickly for us, a real anthem during the pharaonic concerts of the beautiful redhead.
The song also knows a great success in Switzerland, in Germany and in Belgium, announcing beforhands the success of the album ” Anamorphosée ” the following October…
